On July 12th, 2014 after a long battle with his illness, Dr. Artur Hecht died at the age of 80.
Artur was one of the establishers of Israeli oceanography.
He started his education in the Hebrew University in Jerusalem after military service as an B17 machine-gunner and an intelligence researcher
in the Israeli Air Force. He completed his Ph.D. in the Liverpool University and continued his education
as post-doctoral researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and as a visiting scientist at Harvard University.
From 1971 to 1984 Artur was Head of Physical Oceanography Department at Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research in
Haifa.
In his earlier works Artur performed a comprehensive study of the turbulent diffusion of the Nile floods water in the
Mediterranean Sea. He continued to study the Eastern Mediterranean thermohaline structure and circulation based on a series
Marine Climate cruises, which were carried out from two generations of the R/V Shikmona (1979-1987).
Artur was an active member of the POEM international scientific group (Physical Oceanography of the Eastern Mediterranean,
1985-1991). His seminal work, with Pinardi and Robinson, on the mesoscale variability in the Levantine basin, laid the
foundation to the ongoing study of the Shikmona gyre.
A significant part of the Artur scientific activity was devoted to the research of air–sea interaction in the Dead Sea.
Supported by team of his department, Artur established (1992) and maintained, for over a decade,
permanent marine-meteorological observations from
the open sea anchored platform. This work required original and outstanding engineering solutions. The meticulous
observations he conducted resulted in the description of the Dead Sea meteorological conditions.
Artur was wise men with vast knowledge beyond his professional work (especially in the history of Mediterranean region –
assisting as a volunteer in a few archeological studies) and profound love for Israel.
His kindness and generosity knew no limits and after retiring from the Institute he worked as a volunteer at Yad Sarah –
an organization that provides medical equipment free of charge for those in need. Many of us learned from Artur to be tolerant to the surrounding world and to
set high standards for oneself.
We are all deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague and teacher, honest partner and sincere friend.

ד"ר ארטור הכט הלך לעולמו ב-12 ביולי 2014, בגיל 80 לאחר מאבק ממושך במחלה.
ארטור היה אחד המייסדים של האוקיינוגרפיה הפיסיקלית בישראל.
לאחר שירות צבאי כמקלען ב-B17 ואיש מודיעין בחיל האוויר, ארטור סיים את לימודי התואר הראשון באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים. את לימודי הדוקטורט השלים באוניברסיטת ליברפול והמשיך לפוסט דוקטורט במכון Scripps שבקליפורניה, וכמדען אורח באוניברסיטת הארוורד.
משנת 1971 ועד 1984, ארטור ניהל את המחלקה לאוקיינוגרפיה פיסיקאלית במכון לחקר ימים ואגמים לישראל.
במחקריו המוקדמים ארטור ביצע מחקר מקיף על דיפוזיה טורבולנטית של מי שטפונות הנילוס בים התיכון. הוא המשיך למחקר על המבנה התרמוהליני ותבניות הזרימה במזרח הים התיכון, אשר התבסס על סדרת הפלגות שנערכו על גבי שני דורות של ספינת המחקר "שיקמונה" בין השנים 1987-1979.
ארטור היה חבר פעיל בקבוצת POEM (קבוצה בין לאומית לחקר האוקיינוגרפיה הפיסיקלית באגן המזרחי של הים התיכון 1991-1985). עבודתו התקדימית, ביחד עם המדענים פינארדי ורובינסון, על השונות במזו-סקלה של האגן הלוונטיני, הניחה את היסודות למחקר המתמשך של מערבל שיקמונה.
חלק ניכר מהפעילות המדעית של ארטור הוקדש למחקר תהליכי אוויר-ים בים המלח. בסיוע של צוות המחלקה, ארטור הקים (1992) ותחזק במשך למעלה מעשור
מערכת מדידות מטאו-ימיות על גבי פלטפורמת עגינה בים המלח
. עבודה זאת דרשה פתרונות הנדסיים מקוריים ויוצאים מגדר הרגיל. התצפיות הדקדקניות שניהל שימשו לתיאור התנאים המטאורולוגיים בים המלח.
ארטור היה אדם חם, חכם, בעל ידע נרחב בתחומים רבים מעבר לתחום המקצועי שלו (במיוחד בהיסטוריה של הים התיכון ואף השתתף כמתנדב בכמה מחקרים ארכיאולוגיים של ארץ-ישראל) ואהבה עזה לישראל. לנדיבותו ולרוחב ליבו לא היה גבול ולאחר פרישתו (1999) עבד במשך שנים רבות כמתנדב ביד-שרה. ארטור הכשיר רבים מדור ההמשך של האוקיינוגרפים הפיסיקלים בישראל. ממנו למדנו להיות סובלניים לעולם שסביבנו ולהציב לעצמנו דרישות גבוהות.
