Operational Oceanographic Forecasting System for SouthEastern Levantine.

Alexey Murashkovsky, Irina Lunin and Steve Brenner

The core of operational oceanographic forecasting system is POM (Princeton Oceanographic Model) (Blumberg, A. F. and G. L. Mellor, A description of a three-dimensional coastal ocean circulation model. Three-Dimensional Coastal ocean Models, edited by N. Heaps, 208 pp., American Geophysical Union., 1987). The model ver. Dec-2004 (pom2k) was adapted to run operationally at IOLR for SouthEastern Levantine shelf in framework of MFSTEP WP9 - "Forecasting at the regional scale and modeling at the shelf scale".

System covers domain from 33.50° to 35.66° E and from 31.00° to 33.61° N with horizontal resolution ~1.5 km. The vertical resolution is 24 sigma layers. The boundary conditions are taken from ALERMO and forcing is SKIRON atmospheric model.

System runs on every Thursday, producing forecasts for 5 days, starting Wed, 12Z. The results are published on the Internet immediately after computations are finished for entire period as six hours means.
